Michigan Adopts New Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators
BIG NEWS FOR MICHIGAN'S EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION FIELD!
In response to national trends and the evolving needs of the early childhood workforce, Michigan is proud to announce the adoption of a brand-new set of Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators!
These new standards replace the Michigan Core Knowledge and Core Competencies (CKCCs) and are fully aligned with the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s (NAEYC) Professional Standards and Competencies. This exciting shift positions Michigan at the forefront of a nationwide movement to unify and elevate the early childhood education profession.
Why This Matters
The Michigan Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators define the essential knowledge, skills, and practices early educators must demonstrate to support children from birth through age eight. These standards reflect the nationally recognized Power to the Profession initiative and build a stronger foundation for the preparation, support, and growth of early childhood educators.
Key Benefits of the New Standards
- Consistency Across Systems – Aligning with national standards ensures Michigan’s educators are prepared and recognized across the country.
- Mobility and Recognition – Educators moving between state and national frameworks will experience smoother transitions, with their competencies recognized and valued across settings.
- Stronger Educational Programs – This alignment helps ensure ECE programs meet both state and national standards, improving the quality and relevance of professional development and higher education offerings.
- Elevating the Profession – Reinforces Michigan’s commitment to a skilled, respected, and unified early childhood workforce.
What’s Inside the New Framework?
Michigan’s new standards include nine key competencies:
- Six standards adopted directly from NAEYC
- Three Michigan-specific standards that reflect the unique needs and priorities of our state’s early childhood education system
Together, we are strengthening the foundation of early childhood education - creating consistency, honoring professionalism, and ensuring every child in Michigan has access to high-quality early learning experiences.
